Will 2025 See a Return to the Office? Examining the Tug-of-War Between Businesses and Employees

One of my most accurate predictions we made about recruitment trends in 2024 was the rise of “realignment” – the shift back towards more office-based work environments. While many embraced remote work initially, 2025 might see this trend gain even more momentum, driven by a surprising force: big business.

Data-Driven Decisions from Big Business

What’s fueling this renewed emphasis on office-based working? Big companies, with their vast resources and access to employee data, are seeing patterns that concern them. Whilst most businesses are keeping their cards close to their chests and not revealing which data provided the tipping point for returning to the office, there’s clearly something that many businesses are noticing that they want to redress. These are some possible reasons behind it:

  • Decreased Productivity: The initial shift to remote working was hailed for its benefits to productivity and although there is no doubt that it still works for some, is this still the case. When remote was first thrust into the limelight during the pandemic, many feared for their job. Has this subsided and has complacency set in?
  • Collaboration & Innovation: The impact on collaboration and subsequent innovation delivered up by teams was never going to be immediately evident given the protracted nature of the results that these aspects of teamwork deliver. Is the data now starting to reveal a steady decline?
  • Knowledge Sharing: Given the nuanced way in which we learn from each other through in-person engagement, are teams starting to realise there are knowledge gaps that didn’t exist before? Is there a desire to return people to the office to support the learning, development and training of teams coming through the ranks?
  • Culture Erosion: The sense of community and shared values that defines a company culture might be weakening in a remote setting. There’s no doubt that phenomena such as The Great Resignation had a big impact on businesses, so is the return to the office being used as a tool to safeguard against employee turnover?

Employee Backlash on the Horizon

These concerns seem to be outweighing the potential downsides of a full return, even if it means facing employee dissatisfaction. Employees are likely to resist a complete shift back to the office, especially after experiencing the flexibility of remote work.

A Year of Tug-of-War

2025 might see a tug-of-war between businesses and employees on the work model. Companies will likely push for more in-person collaboration, while employees may prioritise flexibility and work-life balance.

What Does This Mean For You?

As an employee, it’s crucial to be proactive in navigating this evolving work landscape. Here are some tips to help you thrive:

  • Know Your Worth: Understand your skills and experience, and don’t be afraid to negotiate for flexible work arrangements that suit your needs. Be empathetic to the needs of the employer as well and try to find a compromise that works for both.
  • Research Company Culture: When considering job offers, investigate the company’s work culture, including its policies on remote work and work-life balance. A good company culture works for both sides, so in the event that a business is flexible when it comes to remote working, try to understand what they do to promote inclusion amongst their teams.
  • Network Strategically: Build strong relationships with colleagues and industry professionals to stay informed about emerging trends and opportunities. If the market is changing but you remain steadfast in your demands, you may find opportunities restricted.
  • Embrace Continuous Learning: Stay up-to-date with the latest industry developments and acquire new skills to remain competitive. You don’t want to fall foul of a knowledge gap that may arise if you lack in-person interaction on a frequent basis.

By understanding the shifting dynamics of the workplace, you can position your career for success in the years to come.
