The Hidden Cost of Isolation

If you spend all day working from home, isolating yourself from physical interactions with colleagues may be stopping you from developing the skills you need to maximise your career potential.

Suggesting this, it could be expected we might get abuse from those who worship the religion of “work-from-home”, so please don’t take this personally! But there are certain things you learn from working within the close proximity of colleagues and peers that are impossible to replicate remotely. That’s just a fact.

Of course there are some businesses where this isn’t the case, but they are few and far between. Take our business for example. We have a team that specialises in recruitment in a very niche sector; we share suitable candidates, we discuss what’s happening at different businesses, we chat about the nuances of different roles, we point out useful updates on our tech stacks, we add context to situations that simply couldn’t possibly be outlined in full on our CRM.

And there are hundreds of these micro-interactions happening every single day. It’s what makes us stronger as a business but also individually helps our team advance their skills and knowledge.

If we scheduled a zoom call every time something came up we’d never get anything done, and if we stopped doing it we’d be weaker for it… both collectively and individually. Maybe not noticeably this week, or this month, or even this year, but our skills and knowledge would be getting gradually eroded.

So, as far as career development goes, there’s a good chance remote work could be holding you back!

I have to stress, whether you choose to work remotely or in the office (or whatever blend of the both you decide works for you) is your choice to make. If you don’t like your current situation, get a new job. And if you’re looking for a new job, you can apply to those that match your needs.

Regardless of what you choose, we can help you find your next FMCG job.

But like everything in life, there are trade-offs, so, unlike what a lot of people on social media would have you believe, you should be aware of the implications of your choices… because there are implications!
